Dark Stripes of Elegance and a Flash of Beauty – The Dynamic Indian Tarantula
Poecilotheria striata, originating from southwestern India and Sri Lanka, is another valued representative of the Poecilotheria genus. Known as the Bengal-Indian Ornamental Tarantula or Striated Ornamental Tarantula, it stands out with its impressive size, characteristic dark pattern on a light background, and arboreal lifestyle. This species is for experienced keepers who appreciate speed, beauty, and the challenges associated with keeping arboreal tarantulas.

Natural Habitat and Geographical Origin
P. striata inhabits the humid tropical forests of India (mainly the states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu) and Sri Lanka. It is a typical arboreal species, spending most of its life in tree canopies, where it builds its silken retreats in hollows, bark crevices, and between branches.

Morphology and Size
Adult Poecilotheria striata individuals reach a leg span of up to 18-20 cm (7-8 inches). They are characterized by a light brown or grayish-brown body, adorned with distinct, dark (black or dark brown) stripes and spots. The carapace often features a flame-like pattern, and the abdomen – a characteristic ornamentation. The legs have alternating dark and light bands. This combination of patterns and colors makes it a species of exceptional aesthetic appeal.

Behavior and Temperament
Like other species in the genus Poecilotheria, P. striata is known for its speed, agility, and defensiveness. These spiders are lightning-fast movers and can escape quickly. When threatened, they may assume a defensive posture or attempt to bite. Their venom is stronger than that of New World tarantulas and can cause painful symptoms, such as intense pain, numbness, muscle cramps, nausea, and flu-like symptoms, which can persist for several days. Direct contact with this species is not recommended.

Feeding Habits
In nature, their diet consists of insects and other small invertebrates. In home captivity, they should be fed appropriately sized feeder insects, such as crickets, cockroaches, or locusts. It is important that the food is live and stimulates the spider to hunt. Adults can be fed once a week or once every two weeks.
Lifespan
Female Poecilotheria striata are long-lived and can live from 10 to 15 years under appropriate captive conditions. Males have a significantly shorter lifespan, typically 3 to 5 years.

Husbandry Requirements
Terrarium: Due to its arboreal lifestyle, a tall terrarium (a "tree-dwelling" or "arboreal" enclosure) of at least 20x20x30 cm for juveniles and 30x30x45 cm or more for adults is necessary. Excellent ventilation is crucial.
Decor: Provide numerous branches, pieces of bark, or bamboo tubes to serve as platforms for building nests and hiding.
Substrate: A shallow layer of substrate (5-10 cm) at the bottom of the terrarium (e.g., coco fiber) will help maintain humidity.
Temperature: The optimal temperature is 24-28°C.
Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels of 70-85% by daily misting the terrarium.
Water: A shallow water dish or regular misting of water droplets on the terrarium walls.
Suitable for Hobbyists
Poecilotheria striata is a species intended for experienced keepers. Its speed, defensive nature, and potentially stronger venom require caution, knowledge, and experience in safely handling tarantulas. It is not a species for beginners.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Yes, all species available in our offer come from verified sources and are safe for home breeding. We do not sell species with venom that is life-threatening to humans.

We use special, secure packaging that protects the animal during transport. Shipping is carried out according to the highest standards, so that the spider arrives in perfect condition.

Every spider needs an appropriate terrarium with proper substrate, a hide, water, and ventilation. In the product descriptions, you will find guidelines regarding the requirements of each species.

We do not recommend direct contact. Spiders are animals for observation, not for touching. For their safety and your comfort, it is best to limit yourself to admiring them in the terrarium.

Adult tarantulas usually only need to be fed once every 7–10 days; younger ones more often. Their diet consists of feeder insects such as crickets or cockroaches.

This is a normal phenomenon – especially during molting. Spiders may not eat for several weeks, or even months. The most important thing is that they have access to fresh water and peaceful conditions.
