Vibrant Colors and Mexican Forest Charm – A Classic Terrestrial Species
Brachypelma emilia, originating from the arid regions of western Mexico, is another esteemed species in the Brachypelma genus, known for its enchanting coloration. Commonly referred to as the Mexican Redleg or Mexican Red-rump Tarantula, it stands out with its combination of a black body with red accents on its legs and a distinctive orange-red carapace. This species has a calm disposition, making it excellent for both beginner and intermediate keepers.
Natural Habitat and Geographical Origin
B. emilia inhabits dry deciduous forests and shrubland in the Mexican states of Nayarit and Jalisco. In its natural environment, it lives terrestrially, digging elaborate burrows under rocks, tree roots, or in dense undergrowth, which provides shelter from predators and temperature fluctuations.

Morphology and Size
Adult Brachypelma emilia specimens typically reach a leg span of 12-14 cm (5-5.5 inches). Their bodies are velvety black, but it is the carapace that gives them their unique character – it is brightly orange-red, often with a black triangular pattern at its base. On the legs, especially on the femoral and patellar segments, distinct red-orange stripes or patches are visible, beautifully contrasting with the dark rest of the body. Juveniles have similar patterns, which become more pronounced as they mature.
Behavior and Character
B. emilia is a species with a very calm and docile temperament, typical of most Brachypelma. It is a spider that rarely exhibits aggression, preferring to flee or kick urticating hairs from its abdomen when threatened. These hairs can cause irritation and itching on human skin, so caution is advised. Bites are extremely rare, and their venom is mild and not a threat to health.
Feeding Habits
In nature, the diet of B. emilia consists mainly of insects and other small invertebrates. In home captivity, they should be fed appropriate feeder insects such as crickets, roaches (e.g., Turkish, Argentine), or locusts. The size of the food should be adapted to the size of the spider. Adult specimens can be fed once a week or once every two weeks.

Lifespan
Female Brachypelma emilia are long-lived, and under optimal captive conditions, they can live for 20 to 25 years. Males live significantly shorter, usually 4 to 6 years. The long lifespan of females makes them animals for many years of observation.
Husbandry Requirements
Terrarium: For an adult specimen, a terrarium measuring approximately 30x20x20 cm is sufficient. It is important to ensure adequate space and good ventilation.
Substrate: A layer of substrate about 10-15 cm deep (e.g., coconut fiber) should be placed at the bottom of the terrarium, allowing the spider to burrow. The substrate should be dry, with a slightly damp area.
Temperature: The optimal temperature for keeping is 24-28°C.
Humidity: Maintain moderate humidity at 60-70%. It is important to avoid stagnant air and ensure good ventilation.
Hide: Be sure to provide the spider with a stable hide (e.g., a piece of bark, a ceramic cave) where it can shelter and feel safe.
Water: A shallow water dish should always be available and regularly refilled.

Suitable for Hobbyists
Brachypelma emilia is an excellent choice for beginner and intermediate keepers. Its charming coloration, gentle nature, and relatively easy-to-meet husbandry requirements make it one of the most enjoyable species to observe and care for. Although it does kick urticating hairs, it does so rarely and only under severe stress.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Yes, all species available in our offer come from verified sources and are safe for home breeding. We do not sell species with venom that is life-threatening to humans.

We use special, secure packaging that protects the animal during transport. Shipping is carried out according to the highest standards, so that the spider arrives in perfect condition.

Every spider needs an appropriate terrarium with proper substrate, a hide, water, and ventilation. In the product descriptions, you will find guidelines regarding the requirements of each species.

We do not recommend direct contact. Spiders are animals for observation, not for touching. For their safety and your comfort, it is best to limit yourself to admiring them in the terrarium.

Adult tarantulas usually only need to be fed once every 7–10 days; younger ones more often. Their diet consists of feeder insects such as crickets or cockroaches.

This is a normal phenomenon – especially during molting. Spiders may not eat for several weeks, or even months. The most important thing is that they have access to fresh water and peaceful conditions.
