A Rare Treasure from Mexico: Unique Golden Bands and a Calm Disposition
Brachypelma auratum, an endemic species from the Mexican state of Guerrero, is a true rarity in the world of tarantula keeping. Known as the Mexican Golden Red-rump or Golden Banded Tarantula, it stands out with its unique, bright pattern of golden bands on its legs, making it one of the most sought-after and aesthetically pleasing representatives of the genus Brachypelma. This species is ideal for keepers looking for something exceptional with a charming disposition.

Natural Habitat and Geographical Origin
B. auratum inhabits dry tropical forests and scrublands in a limited region of western Mexico. Like other terrestrial tarantulas, it digs extensive burrows or adapts existing shelters under rocks and tree roots. Its natural habitat is characterized by a variable climate with distinct dry and rainy seasons.
Morphology and Size
Adult Brachypelma auratum specimens reach a leg span of approximately 13-15 cm (5-6 inches). Their bodies are dark brown or black, except for the legs, which are adorned with extraordinary, bright, golden or orange bands on the tibia and metatarsus segments. This unique pattern gives them an exceptionally elegant and striking appearance. Young spiders are initially less intensely colored, but with each molt, their colors become more vivid.

Behavior and Character
B. auratum is a species with a generally calm and docile temperament, typical of the Brachypelma genus. It rarely shows aggression, preferring to flee or kick urticating hairs from its abdomen when threatened. These hairs, although causing irritation and itching, are not dangerous to humans. Bites are very rare, and their venom is mild, comparable to a bee sting.
Feeding Habits
In nature, their diet consists of insects and other small invertebrates. In captivity, they should be fed live feeder insects, such as crickets, roaches, or locusts. The size of the food should be adjusted to the size of the spider. Feeding once a week or once every two weeks is usually sufficient for adults. It is important not to leave uneaten food in the terrarium for extended periods.
Lifespan
Female Brachypelma auratum are known for their longevity, living from 20 to 25 years under appropriate captive conditions. Males have a significantly shorter lifespan, typically 4 to 6 years.
Husbandry Requirements
Terrarium: For an adult spider, a terrarium approximately 30x20x20 cm (12x8x8 inches) will be suitable.
Substrate: Provide at least 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) of deep, dry substrate (e.g., coco fiber), with a slightly moist area to maintain optimal humidity.
Temperature: The optimal temperature is 24-28°C (75-82°F).
Humidity: Maintain moderate humidity at 60-70%. Good ventilation is crucial to prevent mold growth.
Hide: Provide the spider with a sturdy hide (e.g., a piece of cork bark, half a coconut) where it can retreat.
Water: A shallow water dish is essential and should be refilled regularly.
Suitable for Hobbyists
Brachypelma auratum is an excellent choice for beginner and intermediate keepers who are looking for a species with exceptional beauty and a calm disposition. Its ease of care and resilience make it a satisfying addition to any collection, and its rarity adds to its prestige. However, one should be mindful of its urticating hairs.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Yes, all species available in our offer come from verified sources and are safe for home breeding. We do not sell species with venom that is life-threatening to humans.

We use special, secure packaging that protects the animal during transport. Shipping is carried out according to the highest standards, so that the spider arrives in perfect condition.

Every spider needs an appropriate terrarium with proper substrate, a hide, water, and ventilation. In the product descriptions, you will find guidelines regarding the requirements of each species.

We do not recommend direct contact. Spiders are animals for observation, not for touching. For their safety and your comfort, it is best to limit yourself to admiring them in the terrarium.

Adult tarantulas usually only need to be fed once every 7–10 days; younger ones more often. Their diet consists of feeder insects such as crickets or cockroaches.

This is a normal phenomenon – especially during molting. Spiders may not eat for several weeks, or even months. The most important thing is that they have access to fresh water and peaceful conditions.
