Fiery Accents and Majestic Posture – A Unique Tarantula from the Forest
Poecilotheria rufilata, originating from the humid rainforests of southwestern India, is one of the most distinctive and striking arboreal tarantulas. Known as the Redleg Ornamental Tarantula (or Indian Redleg Tarantula), it stands out with its vivid, reddish hairs on the underside of its legs and distinct dark patterns on a light body. This species has a fast and defensive temperament, making it suitable for experienced keepers.
Natural Habitat and Geographical Origin
P. rufilata is endemic to southwestern India, primarily in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, within the Western Ghats region. It is a typically arboreal species, spending most of its life in tree canopies, where it builds its web shelters in bark crevices, hollows, and among branches.
Morphology and Size
Adult Poecilotheria rufilata individuals achieve an impressive leg span of up to 20-22 cm (8-8.5 inches). Their bodies are light brown or gray, with characteristic black patterns on the carapace and abdomen. Dark stripes are visible on the legs, but it is the bright reddish hairs on the underside of the legs that are its most distinguishing feature, giving it a fiery appearance when moving. Juveniles have similar, though less intense, coloration.
Behavior and Character
P. rufilata is a species characterized by its speed, agility, and defensiveness. Like other Poecilotheria, it tends to flee when threatened, but in an ultimate situation, it can become aggressive and attempt to bite. Its venom is stronger than that of New World tarantulas and can cause significant pain, numbness, muscle cramps, nausea, and flu-like symptoms that can persist for several days. For this reason, handling this species is not recommended, and extreme caution should be exercised during any manipulations.
Feeding Habits
In nature, their diet consists of insects and other small invertebrates that they hunt in the tree canopies. In captivity, they should be fed appropriately sized feeder insects such as crickets, cockroaches (e.g., Turkistan or Argentine cockroaches), or locusts. It is important that the food is live to stimulate the spider's hunting instinct. Adults can be fed once a week or once every two weeks.
Lifespan
Female Poecilotheria rufilata are long-lived and can live from 10 to 15 years under proper keeping conditions. Males have a significantly shorter lifespan, typically 3 to 5 years.

Keeping Requirements
Terrarium: Due to their arboreal lifestyle, a tall terrarium (so-called "arboreal") is necessary, with dimensions of at least 20x20x30 cm for juveniles and 30x30x45 cm or more for adults. Excellent ventilation is crucial.
Decor: Provide numerous branches, pieces of bark, or bamboo tubes, which will serve as platforms for nest building and hiding.
Substrate: A shallow layer of substrate (5-10 cm) at the bottom of the terrarium (e.g., coco fiber) will help maintain humidity.
Temperature: The optimal temperature is 24-28°C.
Humidity: Maintain high humidity at 70-85% by misting the terrarium daily.
Water: A shallow water dish or regular misting of water droplets on the terrarium walls.
Suitable for Hobbyists
Poecilotheria rufilata is a species intended for experienced keepers. Its speed, defensive nature, and potentially stronger venom require caution, knowledge, and experience in safely handling tarantulas. This is not a species for beginners.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Yes, all species available in our offer come from verified sources and are safe for home breeding. We do not sell species with venom that is life-threatening to humans.

We use special, secure packaging that protects the animal during transport. Shipping is carried out according to the highest standards, so that the spider arrives in perfect condition.

Every spider needs an appropriate terrarium with proper substrate, a hide, water, and ventilation. In the product descriptions, you will find guidelines regarding the requirements of each species.

We do not recommend direct contact. Spiders are animals for observation, not for touching. For their safety and your comfort, it is best to limit yourself to admiring them in the terrarium.

Adult tarantulas usually only need to be fed once every 7–10 days; younger ones more often. Their diet consists of feeder insects such as crickets or cockroaches.

This is a normal phenomenon – especially during molting. Spiders may not eat for several weeks, or even months. The most important thing is that they have access to fresh water and peaceful conditions.
